We are very happy to welcome Ilyas Tiouassiouine-Maes to the DTU – Intelligent Transportation Systems as a new PhD Student! 🎓🚶‍♂️🛳️

Ilyas has joined our group as a PhD Student working on the project “Machine learning for scenario discovery in complex urban systems”. The project is a collaboration between the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and DTU. It is supervised by Professor Francisco Pereira (DTU) and Associate Professor Carlos Lima de Azevedo (DTU) and by Doctor Biagio Ciuffo and Doctor Georgios Fontaras (JRC). The project aims to evaluate the impacts of urban planning policies by exploring high-dimensional decision spaces through the use of machine learning, causal representation learning, metamodeling and agent-based simulation tools.

Ilyas holds an Engineering diploma in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from the Polytechnic School of the Université de Lille and a Master’s degree in the Management of Industrial and Technology Companies from the Business School of the Université de Lille. His master’s research focused on the integration of Natural Language Processing technologies in multinational companies.

During his studies, he worked at Statbel (Statistics Belgium), as a Statistical Engineer on negative sampling coordination for national citizen surveys and on non-respondent profiling. He also worked at ADEO, a multinational DIY holding company, as a Legacy Modernisation Developer on the modernisation of cross-country Supply Chain data flows related to the receipt of goods. After graduating, he completed a traineeship at the JRC on AI for geospatial metadata and contributed to the European Commission’s 2025 Generative AI Outlook Report.
